The largest ski domain in the Alpes! Between lake Geneva and Mont Blanc, Châtel is at the centre of the Portes du Soleil ski domain with 400 miles of ski slopes and 198 ski-lifts linking 12 resorts in france and Switzerland. You could come back to the Domain year after year, and always discover new sensations and new pleasures. Down the mogul lane or the ski slopes with their panoramic views, you can combine the thrills of skiing with breath-taking scenery as you make your way through pine forests and past summer pasture chalets. Châtel’s ski-lifts, as part of this superb French and Swiss domain, are the 15th largest sales in France, and the 3rd largest in the County, earning 19 million euros a year.

The resort covers two mountains: Super-Châtel/Barbossine, and la linga/Pré-la-Joux/Plaine-Dranse, and numerous other facilities in and around the village. From beginner to experienced skier, everyone can find the ideal slopes for his or her level. But Châtel is also at the heart of the Portes du Soleil international domain with direct links to the Swiss resorts of Torgon and Morgins, and to Avoriaz on the french side. You can leave Châtel in the morning, and come back in the evening having visited five french and Swiss resorts on the way!

Châtel’s inclusive prices for ski-lifts enable you not only to ski on all the Châtel Resort slopes (Village, Linga - Plaine Dranse, Super-Châtel, Barbossine), but also throughout the Torgon Domain in Switzerland, the descent to Morgins, together with the Braitaz domain in la Chapelle d’Abondance: 130 km of ski-pistes, 72 slopes and 58 lifts!

THE SMOOTH PARK SNOWPARK AT SUPER-CHÂTEL

The Smooth Park in the Super-Châtel sector is the essential meeting place for all levels of freestylers! it is accessed via les Coqs and les Bossons ski tows.

THE SUPER-CHÂTEL FUN AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY ZONE…

It is a course of about 250 m long, cordoned off and secured with nets. People can come to measure how fast they can ski, either with a professional ski instructor or alone… it is fun and educational. This course is fitted with a timing device that shows skiers their speed on an electronic display.

THE PURPLE MILKA SLOPE

Animal and plant life of our mountains are the two themes represented by figures and information signs. Designed for children, but accessible to all, this slope is in the Super-Châtel area. Entertainment with the Milka cow every day during school holidays and organisation of slope snacks.

NIGHT SKIING

Throughout the season, on Thursday evenings, from 7.30 to 9.30 pm, on the fully lit linga slalom area, with sound entertainment. free access.

SNOW-SHOEING TRAILS

In Châtel, 40 km of marked trails enable people to discover nature during the winter season in all its splendor and diversity. Different trails have been designed to satisfy all desires: from one-hour walk to a sporting hike of 4 or 5 hours. Some of these trails are accessible simply by walking or with snowshoes, others require snowshoes. These trails have been marked with special signs, as the slopes could be. Morgins (Châtel’s neighbour in Switzerland) is directly linked with the Châtel’s snowshoeing trails as it is with the downhill slopes… Together, they propose more than 80 km of circuits! A special common guide has been printed, presenting the large snow-shoeing offer in the Vallée d’Abondance (Abondance, la Chapelle and Châtel) and Morgins in Switzerland. Also a program of snowshoeing outings guided is available at the Tourist office.

ICE DIVING

For a first time or for experienced divers, people can plunge in the lake of Vonnes in complete safety, with underwater diving instructors who hold a national qualification. All equipment (dry suit and bottle) is provided, and there is also a heated room to change clothes, which have been left, after diving.

DRAWING AND PAINTING LESSONS

THE ABONDANCE VALLEY DOVES

The Abondance Valley doves have already been seen by a certain number of people… it takes between 3 and 5 hours working with the opinel Knife… Also patience is required to cut a magnificent dove with very nice laced wings which have been done so carefully… in fact, the dove is made with two wooden pieces… This is a local tradition which handed

down from father to son. Let’s visit Jean-Pierre David, a farmer who is passioned by the very old customs, who cuts the doves in his farm in the village.

VISIT THE FARM AND SEE HOW ABONANCE CHEESE IS MADE

A comprehensive explanation given by the farmer makes the visitors know all the secrets of making a so delicious cheese.

The hospitality and services provided for families and children in Châtel has been awarded by the national tourism network. The traditional resort is located on a huge ski domain. This means a great choice of possibilities, Châtel does not forget the children and proposes numerous equipments and activities for the very young holidaymakers. The resort is conscious that if the children enjoy themselves and spend good holidays, their parents will be proud to explain the progress made during skiing lessons and give details of the nice moments spent during their vacation in the site. Together with the tobogganing area situated at Pré-la-Joux, Châtel counts already several organizations to make the children do activities and discover skiing according to their age:

• Le Club Piou Piou/Le Village des Marmottons: children from 3 to 6 years old.

• Francis Sport School’s Jardin des Pitchounes: children between 3 and less than 5 years old.
